Need a throw-back toy for your desk? Our miniature version of the Iconic Czech Tatra should fit the bill. This classic wind-up toy car includes a special key for winding its clockwork propulsion mechanism. Special feelers built into the front end prevent the car from driving off the table by automatically changing its direction.
Introduced in 1936, the Czechoslovakian Tatra T87 was an improved version of the Tatra Company's model T77, which debuted in 1934 as the world's first production aerodynamic and rear engine automobile. Characteristic for the Tatra 87, which in contrast to the preceding model Tatra 77 was given an all-metal body, are its short front hood, long drawn-out rear, air scoops situated between roof and hood and opening towards the front, side windows inclined towards the interior, as well as the three piece windshield. The rear with its dorsal fin was considered sensational, while the non-existent rear window showed its form at its best.
With an air-cooled V-8 engine behind the rear axle, The Tatra 87 attained a top speed of 100 mph and had a cruising speed of 80 mph with good acceleration while achieving about 19 mpg. Passengers enjoyed a spacious and nearly soundproof interior, a very smooth ride, and increased safety provided by a steel body. Even thought the Tatra T87 was a rather expensive luxury automobile, about 3,056 were made through 1950. The Tatra Company produced passenger automobiles from 1897 until 1999. They still produce trucks and are owned by the American company Terex.
